We always have Poinsettias around our house at Christmas time, this flower is known in Mexico and Guatemala as "Noche Buena" which means "Christmas Eve". It's associations with Christmas go back to a 16th century Mexican legend that a young girl was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus’ birthday but was inspired by an angel to collect weeds from the side of the road as an offering. The weeds then sprouted into beautiful crimson Poinsettias. That star shape of the flower also is seen as symbolic for the Star of Bethlehem.
Apart from being a family tradition in our home, photos such as this one also provide a great reference photo for sketching from!
